I've been wanting to make a punch for a while now and I figured our one year anniversary is a perfect time to do it. I often make punches, like the Bombay Government Punch, when we have people over and I can make it in advance and then let people serve themselves. The tradition of communal drinking needs to be brought back!
This punch is very easy to make and very tasty. I owe thanks to David Wondrich for coming up with this punch and for his excellent book, Punch. Every single person who has tasted this punch as liked it.
Bombay Government Punch (for 3 people)
~3oz lime juice
~3oz 2:1 simple syrup (use a turbinado or demerara sugar)
.5 quart black tea
.5 bottle rum
Mix all ingredients together in a punch bowl. Adjust for taste. Let punch bowl sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Prior to service, remove bowl from refrigerator and add some chunks of large ice. Grate fresh nutmeg over the top immediately before service.
