Dedektif olmak için hiçbir vasfı ve en ufak bir hevesi olmayan nevrotik kahramanımız, kendi iradesi dışında cinayet soruşturmasına katılır. Ayrıca sırf mazlum olduğu için bu zanlının masum olmasını istemektedir. Ketum ve soğuk Başkomiser Fatih'in ardından sürüklenerek, insanın sinirini bozacak kadar beceriksizce şüphelileri değerlendirir.
İyice çıkmaza giren soruşturmada belki de en işe yarar niteliği vicdanının sızısıdır. Toplum dışına itilmiş yoksul insanlara kalbinin en derin yerinden duyduğu sevgi ona yardımcı olur. Burnunun ucundakini göremeyen Berna, an gelecek kimsenin göremediğini görecektir.

The main setting of Murder in Grand Bazaar is the historical peninsula of İstanbul. It is a week-long adventure that begins with the murder of an American tourist. The protagonist, Berna, is the tour guide of the deceased man and his wife. Berna is a divorced, overweight, depressive woman in her late thirties with a number of personal issues. Although she is unwilling to leave her comfort zone, she finds herself somehow included in the police investigation, against her best efforts. Later, she becomes intrigued by the mystery and with the help of a little luck; she plays a crucial role to find the murderer. The novel, besides being a murder mystery, depicts very vividly and humorously the white collar scene and to some degree the sans-culotte of current İstanbul, through the eyes of Berna.
On Saturday, Berna meets her clients, a married couple, in the lobby of a five star hotel by the Bosphorus. The wife, Grace is passive and silent and the older husband, Andrew is dominant and obnoxious. Within seconds Berna finds the man unbearable and, during the day struggles to render her services as a tour guide. Later in the afternoon Andrew is found dead in the courtyard of a "han" in Grand Bazaar, which is a huge covered market from the 15th century with more than 3000 shops.
The next day, her boss convinces Berna that she should help out the police officer in charge of the investigation, Fatih, as he seemingly lacks the language skills to interact with the foreign parties. US Embassy and the lawyer of Andrew have gotten immediately involved in the case. Fatih starts to drag Berna to all interviews even when there is no need to make translation and Berna keeps looking for a plausible explanation for his odd behavior.
The main suspect is a young man from a poor family, Teoman, with an intellectual disability. He was at the scene of murder, when the body of Andrew is discovered. The wife is also a suspect but there is no evidence to tie her to the crime. Another one is a flamboyant and ridiculous Turkish woman, a talentless painter, Merve who has a fling with Andrew.
On Thursday a weird friend of Berna, Muzaffer, to whom she has ambivalent feelings, goes to the police department. He confesses committing the murder of Andrew. After talking to him, Berna realizes that Muzaffer is mentally unstable and also very much in love with Merve. Merve is a member of a postmodern "religious" group which is very appealing to Muzaffer, considering his state of mind.
On Friday, Berna goes back to the vicinity of Grand Bazaar and there bumps into a beggar that she saw on the day of murder. She notices that, he is wearing the scarf that once belonged to Andrew. After making the unfortunate man talk, she finds out how he obtained the scarf and how he witnessed not the murder, but the moments after the murder. Thus she understands who the real killer is. Later, she also finds out the real reason why she was included in the police investigation.
