Yasemin Somuncu’s encounter with a young Syrian boy outside her Istanbul home changed her view of the Syrian refugee crisis from an abstract tragedy into something very personal. In this video she appeals to our shared humanity, showing that we can all be better neighbors to one another.
Yasemin Somuncu received her BA degree from Middle East Technical University and her MA in Environment and Energy Studies from the Architectural Association Graduate School in London, UK (AA). She established her own company after graduating, building several years of experience and earning multiple professional awards. She has been a senior researcher in the Center for Energy Environment and Economy (CEEE) in Özyeğin University, İstanbul since March 2012. She is coordinating two EU FP7 projects on Turkey: NEED4B (Demonstration of Very Low Energy New Buildings) and BRICKER (Total Renovation Strategies for Energy Reduction in Public Buildings). Among her recent collaborative publications are “Dimension of Energy Efficiency and Towards Zero İstanbul 2050,” “A Campus with Green Ideas: Özyeğin University Çekmeköy Campus,” “The Energy-Efficiency-Core Concept for a New Building,” “Integrated Engineering and Architecture for the Energy Efficient Academic Buildings,” and “Evaluation of Certification Systems for Sustainable Energy Applications” (currently under review).
